How, when, and why did you learn how to knit?

I learned to crochet when I was still six, staying with my grandmother who taught me when one of my brothers was born, and mom farmed the rest of us kids to relatives for that first week she was home. About two years later I was taught to knit at about age eight by a classmate on the bus ride to and from school. Her mother was an Australian war bride so I learned English style first. My friend Marri only know how to do the knit stitch so that’s all I knew until a couple of years later when a childhood friend of my mom’s was visiting and showed me. Somewhere in all of this, a neighbor showed me how to knit continental as I had a death grip on the yarn with my right hand and could barely move stitches. Continental proved more effective for me and also more comfortable, since I had already learned to tension yarn in my left hand from crocheting.

My first stitch pattern I learned was what I later learned was brioche, so it involved YOs. I did them as I had learned in crochet, which was wrapping the opposite way as they’re usually done in knitting. I recognized this, and instead of converting the YO direction, I switched all my knitting and purling stitches to the same clockwise wrap direction to match.

The first full project I knit was a sweater, a cardigan in two-color brioche, or at least my version of brioche, which I designed myself at about age 14. I wore it, and another pullover version of the same stitch throughout high school. I didn’t know how to read patterns then, so I had to design it.

Knit Notes is available for download from Google Play or on the web at www.knit-notes.com.

Knitting Row Counter, or Knit Notes, stores your knitting or crochet project data in the cloud, so you can access your knitting data from any android device. Basic users can store five free projects. Pro users can store an unlimited number of projects.

Knitting Row Counter (Knit Notes) is divided into a few sections:

MY PROJECTS Track your knitting or crochet projects here, including storing your project name, status, craft (knitting, crochet, loom knitting), category, keywords, dates (start, due, completed), project notes, and linked crochet hooks and knitting needles.

You can create advanced row counters for each project. By default, your first row counter starts at zero at counts incrementally. Users can add multiple row counters, reset or repeat each one after a certain number, track the number of times you’ve rolled over each row counter, and even link each row counter to the “main” counter. Row counters can be edited by clicking on the settings button.

MY KNITTING NEEDLES Track all of your knitting needles here, including the needle’s type, size, material, manufacturer, length, notes, and a flag of whether or not the needle is currently in use. You can also set the ownership status, which will eventually pro users build a shopping wish list!

Ravelgurumi provides a simple way to find and download amigurumi (soft toy) patterns on your iPhone or iPad to knit or crochet.

Using popular patterns from Ravelry, the app highlights a featured pattern once a day as well as convenient groups of patterns by type.

You will need to log in using your Ravelry account to get the patterns or sign up if you don’t have an account already. It’s free to set up a Ravelry account and really quick and simple to do.

Patterns show tags to identify whether they are knit or crochet, how hard they are to make, and show a rating of how popular they are.

A pattern can be viewed in more detail by pressing on it, which expands it to give a fuller description. Full patterns can be downloaded to “My Patterns” and viewed within the app. Where multiple languages are available, the app lets you choose a version to use — this can be changed at a later time if needed.

Each full pattern has a convenient row counter to help you keep track of where you are in the pattern. This is remembered each time you come back to the pattern so you will always know where you are up to. The row counter can be reset using Reset button, or by shaking your iPhone or iPad.

You can easily find the patterns that you have downloaded in the My Patterns section of the app, when you want to work on them. If you no longer want a pattern you can delete them from here by editing them, or by choosing Remove when viewing the full pattern details.

In addition to the grouped patterns provided, more patterns can be found by searching or selecting Find More. The app suggests search terms if you need some inspiration.

To give the best experience, grouped patterns are available offline. If you refresh a group, it will get the latest patterns in the group and clear down any old ones. On scrolling down, more patterns will be added to the group if available.

The app respects your phone setting for light or dark appearance, and adapts its theme accordingly.

Make-One

Chrome extension that copies a Ravelry project and makes a new one for the user.

User must sign into Ravelry and authorize the extension to make changes.

Copies information that’s likely to be useful in a new project based on a previous one. Once copied, the project can be edited as usual. Adds a link to the original project in the private notes.

Your stash is updated when copying one of your own projects using stashed yarn. If copying someone else’s project that includes stashed yarn, basic information about the yarn is included in the new project, but it is not added to your stash. (Of course this has no effect on the other person’s stash.)

If the new project’s name would conflict with an existing project, a number is added to name, like “(2)”. If the original project had no name, the new one is called “untitled”.

You can find the extension by visiting the Chrome Web Store and search for Ravelry, select Make-One and then click the “Add to Chrome” button.

Please note: Your data never leaves your browser. This extension only talks to Ravelry and does not collect/send any of your data elsewhere.

Проект, паттерн — да какая разница???

А разница, между прочим, огромная… 

Проект (project) — нитки купила, села, связала, сфотографировала, показала. Вот вам и проект. 

Или журнальчик купила (схему из интернета скачала, описание от известного дизайнера на том же Ravelry получила/купила/протестировала), указала название/номер журнала (имя дизайнера/название модели), сфотографировала, показала. 

Люди пришли, посмотрели, похвалили. Всё!

От того, что в аннотации к проекту вы подробно напишете, как вязали, из каких ниток, или (Боже упаси!) за сколько и где вы эту вещицу продаёте, ваш проект не станет паттерном.

• На странице проекта НЕЛЬЗЯ размещать фрагменты описания, по которому вы вязали. Нельзя в качестве иллюстраций загружать странички из описания, нельзя в аннотации копировать текст описания. 
• Если вы внесли какие-то изменения в авторский дизайн и связали по-своему, не надо указывать точные цифры и цитировать описание (не пишите «Набрала 160 петель вместо 180-и», пишите «Набрала  на 20 петель меньше, чем указано в описании».)

Паттерн (pattern) — описание, шаблон. Инструкция, по которой другой человек, приложив некоторые усилия, сможет связать вещь, очень похожую на вашу. 

Причём не страничка из журнала, стащенная вами с какого-нибудь сайта, не листочек из тетрадки с нарисованной от руки схемой. Не ссылка на тему на «осинке», где в одном сообщении Таня показала схему каймы, а через пять страниц Маня выложила ссылку на сайт, откуда она вот этот узорчик брала…

Равелри — как огромный библиотечный каталог, содержащий информацию обо всех моделях для вязания крючком или спицами. 

То, что дизайнерам предоставлена возможность дополнительно ещё и продавать описания — всего лишь приятный побочный эффект, но это не магазин, и никто не платит за размещение своих описаний. 

Пополнять этот каталог могут и дизайнеры, и простые пользователи.

Однако, не следует тащить в базу данных всё подряд.

Если вы — дизайнер…

Если вы — дизайнер, то вам следует знать, что

• Паттерн — полная инструкция по изготовлению совершенно конкретной вещи. От первой петельки до последней. И только в формате pdf-файла. Инструкция,  доступная всем желающим для бесплатного скачивания или покупки.  Желательно, чтобы непосредственно с Ravelry, а не с левого файлообменника или какого-нибудь другого сайта.  
• Страница паттерна оформляется в соответствии с определёнными требованиями.
• Ссылки в аннотации к паттерну не должны вести на сайт, с которого вы продаёте эту вещь в натуральном виде. Для продажи готовых изделий существуют другие сайты!

Вообще, почти каждая русская женщина — сама себе дизайнер. 

Нитки купила, тут что-то увидела, там посмотрела… и связала. Вещь красивая, оригинальная. Авторская. 

Но это не значит, что надо бежать сломя голову и делать страницу паттерна. 

Ещё раз напоминаю: 

• Проект — это то, что вы связали. По чужой идее или сами придумали, всё равно это только проект. 
• Паттерн — это инструкция по изготовлению конкретной вещи. Инструкция, по которой любой человек, имеющий две руки и 10 пальцев, свяжет вещь, почти такую же как ваша. 

Показываю разницу:

проект

Шаль, которую я сама придумала, сама связала. Люди смотрят, хвалят или ругают. И всё!

паттерн

Люди скачивают мою инструкцию, распечатывают, вяжут свои шали, создают свои проекты.

При этом, если собрать все фотографии из проектов и сделать их чёрно-белыми, разобраться, где чья шаль, будет проблематично.

Идея одна и та же, одни и те же нитки. Но шалей — две. Потому и два проекта.

Но т.к. идея одна и та же, паттерн только один.

Люди покупают инструкцию, скачивают и создают свои проекты.

Молодые и новые домены плохо продвигаются в высококонкурентных тематиках. Также важна история домена и сайта. Старые домены с плохой историей сложно продвинуть. Поисковые системы любят старые, тематические домены с хорошей историей (без фильтров, спама, черного сео и т.п.).

Ravulous is an Android app which uses the Ravelry API to offer a couple of potentially useful knitterly things on-the-go. It’s no substitute for the amazingness of the Ravelry website, but here are some things you can do from your pocket:

What sustains your enthusiasm for crafting?

Definitely seeing my friends being successful and showing off their knits. AND showing up to a shop or cafe and knitting with friends. I am someone who loves connecting with people and literally will do a dance of joy if I know a knit night or fiber weekend is on the calendar.

То есть сайт прежде всего американский. Нет, давно уже международный. Но при этом всё-таки американский. 

Хозяева сайта, редакторы, модераторы руководствуются законами США. Особенно в том, что касается авторского права. 

Правила сообщества и Условия предоставления услуг были разработаны с учётом законов Соединённых Штатов Америки. 

Нравятся нам эти правила или не нравятся, но в момент регистрации все нажимали кнопочку, что с правилами ознакомились и согласны их соблюдать. 

Кнопочку нажали и тут же забыли. Да многие и не поняли, чего нажали. Всё ж по-английски…

Сайт американский. Следовательно, язык сайта — ? Правильно, английский. 

Официальный язык сайта Ravelry — английский. 

Никто не запрещает вам общаться внутри сайта на вашем родном языке. 

Называть свои персональные проекты, писать комментарии, общаться на форумах вы можете хоть на языке племени мумба-юмба. 

Но при этом, пожалуйста, не забывайте: все системы и службы сайта настроены на английский язык

И других языков не воспринимают. 

Если вы хотите, что бы вас правильно поняли, чтобы ссылки на ваши паттерны или вашу страницу дизайнера были адекватными («рабочими»), 

имя дизайнера, название модели, название загружаемого файла, страницы источника нужно писать только латиницей. 

Не важно, на каком языке написана инструкция, по которой вы вязали и в какой стране живёт дизайнер, всё равно пишем только латиницей!

Как создать проект и как загрузить паттерн, по-моему, знают даже те, кому и не обязательно. А вот разницу между паттерном и проектом очень многие не понимают… 

How/when/why did you start/learn to knit/crochet?

Growing up I was always making things. In those early years it was friendship bracelets or doing a lot of beadwork making earrings or necklaces. My mother and grandmother were expert seamstresses and passed down their creativity. It wasn’t until a class in college that I was finally exposed to knitting. A girl in my public speaking class was demonstrating how to knit. She showed off her hat and I instantly became obsessed!

I was of the Stitch N’ Bitch era and while that maybe wasn’t the exact book I learned to knit from it WAS the first book I owned and worked from. I loved how she explained how to knit, her tone was fun and playful. I could SO knit with Debbie Stoller. I made a tote bag and a few hats before moving on to a sweater and soon I discovered knit blogs!

I don’t know exactly how I came across the blogs but I felt the connection instantly and quickly went out to create a blog of my own. I loved the immediate connection the blogs allowed you AND I loved being able to share the things I made and to help others with making it. Sure enough when Ravelry came around I was quick to sign up!

I’ve gone on to design a few cowls like the 5th Avenue Infinity Scarf and Snow Cowl and sweaters including my favorite called the Gate Pullover in Knitscene.
